Leasehold and freehold explained

  • Freehold and Leasehold

If you are buying a house, the legal title (how you own the property) is, almost without exception, freehold.  This means that the property ownership is not time limited.

The legal title to flats is leasehold and this is time limited.  Mortgage companies have requirements about the minimum acceptable time limit that remains on the lease before they will lend.
